ST. GEORGE — Kenneth C. Elwell, Sr., 79, died peacefully, yet unexpectedly, while doing what he loved; working outside at his home on his tractor, Monday, April 29, 2024.

Born in Rockland, June 19, 1944 he was one of four sons born to Herbert, Sr. and Lois Boynton Elwell.

At the age of 16 he went to work for his father at Spruce Head Wharf. He later began his career in the transportation industry. For many years Kenny drove trucks for Spruce Head Lobster Maine Coast Seafood, Ferraiolo Construction and Lusty Lobster. In addition, he pumped gas at Creek Hill Service Station in Thomaston.

Kenny ended his career driving a school bus and doing maintenance for MSAD 5 and RSU 13. At that same time he also ran a tractor business.

On May 30, 1969, Kenny married St. George native Carolyn ‘Carrie’ Long in Warren. Together they made their first home in Spruce Head before moving to their River Road home in St. George in 1973.

Ken loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting with his dogs. He was proud of his successful bear hunts and even had the rug to prove it. He could often be found on his tractor, working around the house, digging holes, or doing general clean up. He loved being on that tractor. Ken was a self-proclaimed down-home ‘Mainer’ and ‘red-neck’ and boy did he love to wind people up. He was known to be a bit grumpy at times, but when his family was around, well, his grandkids at least, he was happy. He looked forward to Sunday night suppers with the family and he always wanted to know where the next one would be and what was on the menu.

Kenny will be sadly missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his parents; his brothers, John Elwell, Herbert ‘Hib’ Elwell Jr., Darrel ‘Shorty’ Elwell, Sr.; two nephews, Darrell ‘Cappy’ Elwell, Jr., Scott Elwell; and a grandson, Zachary Elwell.

Ken is survived by his wife, Carolyn ‘Carrie’ Elwell of St. George; his children, Melissa Elwell of Spruce Head, Kenneth Elwell, Jr. and his wife Patti of Owls Head, Melanie Dennison and her husband Allen of Rockland, Randall ‘Randy’ Elwell and his wife Doris of St. George; grandchildren, Sam Elwell, Joshua Elwell, Jessica Elwell, Ashley Dennison and her companion Gabe McKenzie, Sarah Dennison and her companion Chad Nickles, Aaron Dennison and his wife Shannon, Andrew Elwell; his great-grandchildren, Peter, Benjamin, Ashton, Raylon; many nieces and nephews including a special nephew who was like a son, Mike Long; as well as a large loving extended family, many friends and of course his dog Lucy.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 3 p.m., at North Parish Cemetery, Wiley’s Corner, St. George. The Rev. Branan Becknell will officiate. A celebration of life with food and fellowship will follow immediately at the St. George Grange.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the St. George Fire and Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 249, Tenants Harbor, Maine 08460.
