I am writing this letter in support of Jason Trundy, who is running for Waldo County Sheriff.

Jason grew up here in Waldo County and has worked in law enforcement here for 28 years, all with Waldo County Sheriff’s Department. He has served as a Correctional Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Criminal Investigator, Correctional Administrator, Patrol Lieutenant, and for the past seven years as the Chief Deputy to Sheriff Jeff Trafton. His experience with the four sheriffs he has worked under have provided

Jason with a strong understanding of the correctional, patrol and criminal investigation components of the Sheriff’s Office and a deep commitment to the safety of this community. He deeply understands this area and cares about creating a safe community for all local residents, recognizing the social diversity within Waldo County.

One thing I really appreciate about Jason is his commitment to community partnerships. During his 14 years in the Sheriff’s Department command staff, Jason played a role in building programs with several non-profit organizations, faith-based communities, and substance use and mental health treatment providers. These partnerships have led to the development of a number of initiatives that better serve our community, including the Maine Coastal Regional Reentry Center, the Waldo County Recovery Committee, the Community Liaison Program, the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion Program, Recovery Coach Program, and the Restorative Justice Project’s Conflict Resolution Team. Clearly, Jason believes that working together as a community, we can make Waldo County a safer and healthier place for all of us to live.

To this same end, Jason has been working with a local anti-racism group I am part of since summer of 2020, in order to learn more about the history and intersections between policing practices
and the experiences of people of color. As an outcome of this group and learning process, the Sheriff’s Department has partnered with a Maine anti-racism trainer named Dustin Ward to develop and conduct training on anti-racism awareness and practices for all of the Waldo County Sherriff’s Department officers. This will help them better understand how to conduct community policing in a way that
supports local people of color to feel safe and respected by police. This is very important to me because my sons, who were born here, are both biracial.

I look forward to seeing Jason’s continuing contributions to our area. I am very happy Jason is pursuing the office of Waldo County Sherriff in 2022 and I will definitely vote for him in November.
